But really....when you live here....when you actually see it in person...when it's down the street from your house....when you know the people affected....there aren't words to describe the devastation in Enterprise.
My son-in-law is a photo journalist. He came down here Friday night from Atlanta and was at the high school at dawn Saturday morning to take photos.

As I sit here typing this, a local news report on television stated the damage in Enterprise is estimated at 350 million dollars.
All I can think about are those 8 kids who were killed, their families, the 719 families whose homes were damaged and/or destroyed and the 11 acres of woods behind my neighborhood that are gone.
I think I'm going to be sad for a long, long time.

I'm so happy that you're okay. I know a few people that have lived through natural disasters. Many of them lost everything, but their lives. They are much different people now.

I've been through several hurricanes in the past 20 years of living here....but nothing that has caused the devastation of this tornado.
I can understand how it would change your friends who have lived through natural disasters.
All I lost was car windows, but I still feel numb from what I've seen here in town.
Just unreal. I suggest getting involved with the recovery to take your mind off things & to help ease the pain & (irrational) guilt of being spared.

ReplyDeleteWe had a hailstorm a few years ago that tore through a small portion of Sydney (where I was at the time) and within ten minutes of the active storm it caused over a billion dollars worth of damage. You had to see it to believe it.
Pissy, we are all thinking and praying for all the people in Enterprise. It's going to be a long, hard fight. My heart goes out to the families who lost their love ones and homes. If we can help you in any way, please don't hesitate to ask.

ReplyDeleteLike you, I'm sick of hearing about millions of dollars. There are eight families who will never hear their loved ones speak again.
There are countless others whose 'normal' lives are now completely abnormal. You are one of those. The acres of lost forest will forever change your view of your world.

But then when people reach out (which can sometimes be rare in everyday circumstances)it shows how little effort it take to help people in need.

I know that both you and I make fun of that part of the country often, but the truth is, what I remember most about Enterprise when I was with LifeSouth was what a wonderful giving community it was. Enterprise High School always had one of the biggest blood drives in the area.
My heart goes out to those folks.

i am sad for your community, and for you to have to live through the devastation and the loss of the place you live as you know it. i hope the rebuilding is swift and positive.
i hope that the presence of the disaster does not weigh heavily on you. i know people who have lived through hurricanes and such who have had it weigh on them for some time.
take care of yourself - take care of your own stress and upset and do not minimise the psychological and emotional effect on you, just because others had a worse time of it. these kinds of events are hard on everyone.

this is just way too close to home. having lived through this via my family on the coast with Katrina, it is so overwhelming to relive this emotion. you will find it to be a raw spot in your soul for a very VERY long time.
ReplyDeleteyou will HATE politicians (if you don't already) you will hate beaurocracy. you will hate the scam artist and looters that show up.
While at the same time, you will be so proud of your town, your people, their spirit.
You will be grateful for the strangers that come to town to help. fix food, rock babies, pick up debris with thier bare hands.
you won't even know most of their names - but that's okay - they are not there for glory but simply to aide in a time of need.
someone recently said to me...
"We The People need to help We The People."
These horrendous circumstances demonstrate what that statement is all about.
